OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has rejected a $97.4 billion offer from Elon Musk, stating that the company is not for sale and its mission will not be compromised. The offer came just one day after Altman expressed frustration with Musk’s attempts to take control of OpenAI.
Altman made the comments at the AI Action Summit in Paris, where he also criticized Musk’s tactics as trying to “buy” OpenAI without regard for the company’s mission. This comes after OpenAI confirmed plans to restructure its operations, separating its business from the nonprofit board that oversees it.
The reorganization process is still ongoing, with the board yet to determine a valuation for OpenAI’s assets. Altman accused the press of misreporting on the issue, citing “complicated structural” challenges in setting up the long-term arrangement.
Musk’s offer is believed to be part of his ongoing litigation against OpenAI, which he claims has strayed from its original mission as co-founder. In response to the offer, Altman posted a tongue-in-cheek message on X: “no thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”
