The US has its first confirmed human case of bird flu in a worker exposed to infected dairy cattle, according to the Central Nevada Health District. The person is recovering from conjunctivitis after being exposed to the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) considers bird flu to be a low risk to the public.
The outbreak has affected nearly 70 people, mostly farm workers, since April. The H5N1 virus has reduced milk output in cattle and increased egg prices by killing millions of laying hens. A second strain of bird flu, D1.1, was found in dairy cattle in Nevada last week, raising concerns about the US outbreak.
The CDC is monitoring the situation closely, but there is no evidence that the virus is spreading from person to person. One person in Louisiana died after being hospitalized with the same strain.
