Researchers at Microsoft and Carnegie Mellon University warn of the risks of relying too heavily on generative AI in the workplace, citing a study that found over 36% of participants used critical thinking skills to mitigate potential negative outcomes. The study, which involved 319 people who reported using generative AI at least once a week, found that those with confidence in AI tended to use less effort to think critically. To compensate for AI shortcomings, workers need to understand how they work and be aware of the potential harms. If not, overreliance on generative AI can weaken our capacity for independent problem-solving.
