A voluntary recall has been issued by Tri-Union Seafoods for canned tuna products sold under various brand names at national grocery chains, including Costco, Walmart, and Publix. The affected items were shipped to stores in 27 states due to a manufacturing defect that may cause the “easy open” pull tab can lid to leak or become contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacterium that can produce toxins under low-oxygen conditions.
The products were distributed by H-E-B label in Texas and Trader Joe’s label in several other states. Genova canned tuna was sold at Costco in Florida and Georgia, while Van Camp’s labeled tuna was available at Walmart in Pennsylvania, Florida, and New Jersey.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Clostridium botulinum can cause food poisoning, characterized by difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death. Anyone who consumed the affected tuna should seek immediate medical attention.
To address the recall, consumers are advised to return the product to the retailer for a full refund or contact Tri-Union Seafoods directly for a retrieval kit and a coupon for a replacement product.
