Dead birds are washing up on the shores of Lake Michigan, particularly in Chicago, with concerns over bird flu spreading. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources links the incident to the ongoing avian flu outbreak.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources reports an uptick in highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. In Milwaukee County and nearby areas, including Racine and Kenosha, dead ducks have been found with low numbers reported so far. A confirmed case was detected in Racine County.
According to experts, many species can be affected by the disease, but mergansers are particularly vulnerable. The Wisconsin Humane Society is seeing a surge in red-breasted merganser sightings and has received eight birds into their facility.
Residents who find sick or injured birds are advised to contact the Wisconsin Humane Society’s Wildlife Rehabilitation Center at 414-431-6204 for assistance. The source of this information comes from the Wisconsin Humane Society and Department of Natural Resources.
