Chinese electric car maker BYD has made a bold move by making its advanced autonomous driving technology, known as “God’s Eye,” free for all its vehicles, including budget cars. The company announced that the feature, which includes capabilities like remote parking and autonomous overtaking, will be available starting immediately.
BYD’s decision is seen as a game-changer in the market, with experts predicting it could upset the balance of power among electric vehicle manufacturers. Tesla, currently the leader in EV sales, may need to re-think its full self-driving model, as consumers may no longer see a need to pay extra for this service.
However, some experts believe that BYD’s move will have less impact in markets where Chinese automakers already hold a significant market share. In the US and Europe, Tesla remains a dominant player, despite being a smaller market share.
BYD’s founder, Wang Chaunfu, hailed the move as a way to make driving safety technology accessible to everyone. The company’s popular Seagull hatchback will now include the “God’s Eye” feature, which has been available in more upscale models since 2023.
