Sam Kerr, the Australian striker for Chelsea FC, has been found not guilty of causing racially aggravated harassment after making comments about a Metropolitan Police officer. The incident occurred in January 2023 at Twickenham police station in south-west London.
Kerr, 31, denied using the words “stupid and white” as an insult but claimed they were meant to highlight the power dynamic between her and PC Stephen Lovell. She argued that Lovell’s actions contributed to the alleged offense, not her comments.
The jury deliberated for four hours before clearing Kerr of the charges. The Australian international expressed gratitude to her supporters and family, stating she is now focused on returning to football.
Kerr’s legal team had attempted to dismiss the case, citing an abuse of process by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). They argued that a “loophole” in the victims’ right of review scheme was used to justify prosecution proceedings a year after the alleged offense.
