Uganda’s confirmed Ebola cases have increased to nine, according to the country’s health ministry. The outbreak is being driven by the Sudan strain of the virus, for which there is no approved vaccine.
As of Monday, one person had died and seven were receiving treatment in a hospital in Kampala, while one patient was being treated in Mbale, near the Kenyan border. All eight patients are currently in stable condition.
Additionally, 265 contacts of the confirmed cases have been placed under quarantine by the health ministry. To combat the outbreak, Uganda has launched a trial vaccination programme against the Sudan strain of Ebola, which is different from existing vaccines targeting the Zaire strain, previously responsible for outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
