Egg Shortage Hits US Retailers, Some Limit Purchases

The US is experiencing an egg shortage due to the ongoing H5N1 bird flu outbreak. As a result, retailers like Trader Joe’s, Costco, and Aldi are imposing purchase limits on eggs.

Trader Joe’s will limit customers to one dozen eggs per day across its 600 locations nationwide. The hope is that this limit will ensure customers who need eggs can still buy them when they visit the store.

Costco customers are limited to three egg packages at a time, typically sold in two-dozen or four-dozen cartons. Other retailers have not yet responded to requests for comment on potential egg limits.

Some shoppers are taking to social media to document their experiences with empty shelves and limit notices. Walmart, however, has not imposed any national purchase limits, except for 60-count cartons which are limited to two per purchase.

Waffle House has implemented a temporary 50-cent surcharge per egg due to the shortage. The chain hopes that this surcharge will be short-lived as it works with suppliers to meet customer demand while keeping prices low.
