A pregnant Palestinian woman was fatally shot by Israeli forces in the West Bank, highlighting concerns about escalating violence in the region. Sondos Shalabi, 23, and her husband Yazan Shula were fleeing their home in Nur Shams refugee camp after Israeli security forces closed in on the area.
According to Mohammed Shula, Sondos’ father-in-law, she called for help as Israeli snipers fired at her and Yazan. Despite being unharmed herself, Sondos was unable to find medical aid due to Israeli roadblocks and restrictions on movement. Her fetus also died from gunshot wounds.
The incident has sparked outrage among Palestinians, who see it as part of a worrying trend towards more lethal tactics by Israeli forces in the West Bank. At least 905 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas’ attack in Gaza triggered the war.
Israeli officials claim they are investigating the incident, but many Palestinians accuse them of covering up the truth and using excessive force. The Israeli military has denied allegations of forcible evictions, saying civilians can leave on their own accord. However, eyewitnesses describe being ordered to evacuate their homes under threat of violence.
