RED Digital Cinema has announced that its V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X cameras will now be compatible with Nikon’s Z-mount, providing filmmakers with access to a wider range of lenses and enhanced camera features. This collaboration marks the beginning of RED’s partnership with Nikon, which aims to empower filmmakers with greater artistic flexibility.
The update allows for more accurate autofocus on both V-Raptor [X] and Komodo-X cameras, thanks to improved algorithms that take advantage of Nikon’s expertise in phase detection technology. Firmware update 2.0 will also enhance autofocus control, allowing filmmakers to fine-tune sensitivity and make real-time minute iris adjustments.
Another new feature is smooth aperture control, which can be managed via the control rings on Nikon lenses or through the RED smartphone app. This allows for more precise control over the camera’s exposure settings.
The Z-mount version of the V-Raptor [X] is priced at $29,995, while the Komodo-X in Nikon Z Mount is available for $6,995. Filmmakers can also convert RF mount versions to Z-mount, with prices starting at $1,695.
RED is reviving its trade-in program, allowing customers to exchange their existing cameras for a credit towards a new V-Raptor XL [X] Pack or RED V-Raptor Pack [X] Pack with either the new Z Mount or RF Mount. This partnership aims to provide filmmakers with limitless possibilities and enhance their creative capabilities.
