RED Digital Cinema is set to introduce Z Mount options for its flagship V-RAPTOR [X] lineup, marking a significant development in the company’s integration with Nikon’s acquisition earlier this year. The move will offer cinematographers access to Nikon’s extensive Z lens ecosystem, including Cine-Nikkor lenses.
The three configurations available are the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount Starter Pack, V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount Production Pack (V-Lock), and V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount Production Pack (Gold Mount). The Nikon Z Mount features a large 55mm inner diameter and 16mm flange distance, making it an ideal platform for modern virtual production and VFX workflows.
This integration underscores Nikon’s commitment to integrating its proprietary technologies into RED’s industry-leading cinema cameras. As a result, cinematographers will benefit from increased lens versatility, with access to Nikon’s Z lenses and third-party manufacturers producing Z-compatible glass.
The release of the new models is expected to have several implications for the industry, including solidifying Nikon’s presence in cinema production and potentially paving the way for future Nikon-branded digital cinema cameras. With the introduction of the Z Mount, RED’s V-RAPTOR [X] lineup has become an attractive option for high-end productions.
The availability of new Z-to-PL adapters supporting Cookie /i lens communication and record triggering further enhances the camera’s capabilities. Additionally, a range of conversion kits will be available to allow shooters to adapt their existing V-RAPTOR [X] or KOMODO-X bodies to the Z Mount.
As RED officially unveils the V-RAPTOR [X] Z Mount series, it is expected that we will see advancements in sensor technology and camera innovation. With Nikon’s continued investments in sensor development and lens creation, the future of digital cinema may be increasingly influenced by the Japanese imaging giant.
