Boston Celtics newcomer Torrey Craig made his highly anticipated debut at TD Garden on Wednesday night, exceeding expectations with a strong performance off the bench. The 34-year-old veteran wing soaked up the energetic atmosphere and gave the fans plenty to cheer about.
On just his second defensive possession after entering late in the first quarter, Craig poked the ball away from Spurs wing Jeremy Sochan, forcing a turnover. He also knocked down both of his three-point attempts, finishing with six points in under nine minutes of action. His strong 3-and-D play lived up to his reputation as a reliable role player.
Craig’s new teammates were impressed with his contributions, saying he integrated well into the team despite not having practice time together. “He gave us a spark off the bench, hit some threes, backed up on the defensive end,” said Jayson Tatum, who led the C’s with 34 points, 14 rebounds, and seven assists.
Craig had been waiting for this moment after suffering an ankle sprain in December. He regained his rhythm quickly, even though it had been a month since his last game. Coach Mazzulla is confident that Craig will find his way as the team returns from their All-Star break next week. “We’ll work on getting him up to speed with the team,” he said. “He’s got experience, and we want to take advantage of that.”
