FCC Chairman Brendan Carr is seeking an investigation into NBCUniversal, citing concerns that the company’s diversity initiatives amount to discrimination. In a letter to Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, Carr claims that NBCUniversal’s efforts are “odious” and violate federal law.
Carr, who has been wielding his agency’s power over broadcasters since President Donald Trump’s inauguration, points to NBCUniversal’s corporate website and public reports of DEI days as evidence. He argues that the inclusion efforts are discriminatory and can only deprive Americans of their rights to fair treatment under the law.
The investigation is based on FCC regulations regarding equal employment opportunities, which Carr claims were ignored by previous administrations. Democratic Commissioner Geoffrey Starks opposes the investigation, stating it is out of the agency’s lane and reach.
Comcast has received an inquiry from the FCC and will cooperate with their questions. The company has built its reputation on integrity and respect for employees and customers. This move comes after Trump signed an executive order to disband diversity programs in the federal government and cracked down on DEI initiatives receiving federal funding.
