Bird Flu Spreads to Nevada, Raises Concerns for Wildlife Areas

A strain of bird flu has been detected in Nevada, prompting concerns at the Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary and surrounding areas such as Floyd Lamb Park. The 8-acre sanctuary, which is home to over 140 birds, including ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens, peafowl, and exotic birds, has been a staple in the community for over three decades.

Executive Director Jennifer Langford stated that her staff checks the animals daily for signs of illness, such as congestion, runny nose, mucus, cough, or lethargy. To prevent cross-contamination, staff members are designated to specific groups of animals and take precautions like washing their boots, hands, and wearing gloves if necessary.

While rare, bird flu can also be contagious to humans. Langford expressed concerns about the potential threat posed by wildlife and feces at Floyd Lamb Park, which shares a boundary with her sanctuary. She is working closely with city officials to ensure they take necessary precautions and notify her if there are large numbers of deceased birds on the premises.
