Matt Patricia Named Ohio State’s New Defensive Coordinator

Matt Patricia, a former defensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, will take over as Ohio State’s next defensive coordinator. Patricia worked alongside Bill Belichick from 2012 to 2017 and won three Super Bowls during his time in Foxborough. He will be tasked with maintaining the Buckeyes’ top-notch defense despite losing seven starters from last season’s championship unit.

Patricia, who previously served as head coach of the Detroit Lions, has a mixed track record, going 13-29 in three seasons before being fired. However, head coach Ryan Day hopes Patricia’s stint at Ohio State will be more successful and give him another chance to prove himself outside of Belichick’s shadow.

Cornerbacks coach Tim Walton will take over as co-defensive coordinator, while safeties coach Matt Guerrieri will become the passing game coordinator. Patricia’s priorities include developing a new defensive line, featuring players like Kenyatta Jackson Jr. and Caden Curry on the edge.

The decision brings mixed emotions for some Buckeye fans, given Patricia’s lack of coaching success since leaving New England. However, the timing is favorable, allowing the team to acclimate before spring practice begins. This change may also force Ohio State’s starters into more practice reps as they adjust to the new scheme.
