Greece has seen an increase in seismic activity in the Santorini region over the past week, with experts warning that the potential for a larger earthquake is growing. According to recent data from the Laboratory of Seismology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (EKPA), tremors recorded on Monday showed a shift northeastward towards Amorgos, possibly indicating a different segment of the fault line.
The Santorini-Amorgos region has seen significant earthquake activity, with over 1,200 tremors recorded on Monday. The largest quake on that day was a 5.2-magnitude event, while Tuesday’s strongest quake had a magnitude of 4.8. Another 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck the area early Wednesday.
Since January 26, the region has experienced more than 15,300 earthquakes, according to the laboratory. The increased seismic activity has led scientists to caution that there is a possibility of a larger earthquake occurring in the area.
