Berlin Film Festival jury president Todd Haynes expressed concerns about Donald Trump’s administration during a press conference at the festival’s opening. Haynes stated that there is a “state of particular crisis right now in the United States and globally,” and that everyone witnessing these actions is feeling tremendous concern and shock.
Haynes also discussed the impact of Trump’s return on filmmaking, saying it’s essential to maintain one’s integrity and speak out forcefully against issues. He noted that financing for independent films can be complicated but emphasized the existence of supportive financiers who take risks on strong voices.
The festival coincides with Germany’s lead-up to general elections on February 23, marked by rising tensions between right-wing party Alternative for Germany (AfD) and controversy over its inclusion in last year’s opening ceremony. Despite this, festival artistic director Tricia Tuttle emphasized the importance of community and a shared love for cinema as acts of resistance.
The Berlin Film Festival will run through February 23, featuring Tom Tykwer’s new film “Das Licht,” marking his return to the big screen after seven years.
