French Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu has cautioned against making excessive concessions to Russia during planned peace talks on Ukraine. If negotiations rely on weakness, it could lead to a volatile situation and potentially escalate the conflict in the long term. This approach may also send the wrong message to countries like North Korea, Iran, or China, which are believed capable of military aggression.
US President Donald Trump has announced plans to discuss with Putin ending Moscow’s war against Ukraine. The US government has outlined its vision for a deal, requiring Ukraine to abandon NATO aspirations and regain lost territories since 2014. Crucially, US soldiers will not be part of a possible peacekeeping force.
Lecornu questions the future of NATO, which he describes as “the most important and robust military alliance in history.” However, he raises concerns about its long-term viability, suggesting that time will tell if it remains relevant in 10 or 15 years.
