Munich Attack Suspect Identified Before Security Summit

A suspect in a deadly car attack on Monday has been identified as 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker Farhad N. The incident occurred during a trade union rally in Munich, where the victim’s car accelerated towards the crowd, injuring at least 28 people. Police fired one shot at the suspect before arresting him, but he sustained no gunshot wounds.

Counter-terrorism police are leading the investigation, citing indications of an “extremist background” for Farhad N. The attack comes ahead of this weekend’s Munich Security Conference, which authorities have assured is not related to the incident.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called for harsh punishment and deportation for the suspect, who had his asylum application rejected but had deportation suspended in 2016. The incident adds fuel to the growing debate on migration in Germany ahead of a national election.
