Bird Flu Suspected in Michigan Wild Bird Die-Offs

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources is investigating bird flu after finding over 300 dead wild birds in five counties, including Allegan and Washtenaw. The deaths were reported in Shiawassee, Ingham, Eaton, and other areas.

Samples from these locations are being tested at Michigan State University and the US Department of Agriculture laboratory in Iowa to confirm the presence of highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza. Testing results may take weeks or months to come back.

If you find a dead wild bird, experts advise not touching it. Wearing gloves can help prevent disease spread from fresh carcasses, but the virus dies as the bird decomposes.

To report any die-offs, contact the DNR at the provided location.
