A new study has found that the weight loss medication Ozempic can help curb alcohol cravings in people with alcohol use disorder. The research, published on Wednesday, followed 48 adults who met criteria for the condition and received either a low dose of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Ozempic, or a placebo.
The participants were given two hours to consume their preferred alcoholic beverages in a lab setting before taking the medication, and then again after. Over the course of nine weeks, they also reported how much they drank daily.
According to the study, those who received semaglutide experienced reduced alcohol consumption compared to those who received placebo shots. The findings suggest that Ozempic may be more than just a coincidence or a placebo effect, providing potential relief for individuals struggling with moderate to severe drinking habits.
