TB Outbreak in Kansas City: Expert Weighs In on Common Misconceptions

A recent tuberculosis (TB) outbreak in Kansas City, Kansas, has raised concerns among healthcare professionals. With 2 deaths and over 160 active cases reported, the city is facing a significant public health crisis.

According to Dr. Michael A. Bernstein, MD, director of pulmonary and critical care at Stamford Health, TB is often misunderstood as a rare disease. However, it is actually a relatively common condition that affects millions worldwide every year.

“TB has been here, is here, and it’s something that’s relatively common,” Dr. Bernstein said. “We think of it as something that doesn’t really impact us anymore in 2025, but TB has been here, and it’s impacted a pretty big community in Kansas; that’s part of the issue.”

While TB is not typically fatal with modern treatment, the outbreak highlights the importance of addressing the disease’s spread. Dr. Bernstein emphasized the need for better understanding of risk factors and community involvement to combat the outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported a rise in TB cases across the US and globally over the past three years. As the public becomes more aware of the outbreak, it is essential to address common misconceptions about TB to prevent further spread.
