Australian police have launched an investigation into two nurses who were accused of bragging about denying treatment to Israeli patients at a Sydney hospital. The alleged incident has sparked outrage, with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Health Minister Ryan Park labeling the footage “disgusting” and “sickening”.
The video, shared on social media, appears to show two nurses making anti-Semitic comments, including one saying they would kill patients who are Israeli. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the nurses have been stood down from work, with the Health Minister stating that they will not be allowed to work for the state’s health service again.
Police Commissioner Karen Webb described the alleged incident as a “new low” in anti-Semitic incidents in Australia and said it represented “racial hatred on a level that I have not seen before”. The police are seeking to investigate the full content of the footage, which is being provided by an Israeli content creator who first shared it online.
The allegations come amid a wave of anti-Semitic incidents in Australia, including an alleged bomb plot and several arson attacks on synagogues. Advocacy groups have reported a sharp rise in both anti-Semitism and Islamophobia since October 7, 2023.
