Taiwan-based Chinese chain, Din Tai Fung, is set to open its first location in Southern California’s Santa Monica Place mall later this month. The 10,615-square-foot restaurant will offer a wide range of menu items, including signature soup dumplings and vegan options.
The company, known for its international recognition, has announced that it will donate 100% of profits from the soft opening and grand opening weeks to support local, independent restaurants affected by recent wildfires.
Founded in Taiwan in 1972, Din Tai Fung was initially a cooking oil retail shop before expanding into a global brand with over 175 locations worldwide.
The new Santa Monica location, which will feature indoor and outdoor seating on the mall’s third level, is seen as a rare bright spot for the struggling mall. According to reports, the mall’s value has dropped by 59% since 2017 due to decreased occupancy rates and high-profile tenant departures.
Despite these challenges, local officials have expressed optimism over Din Tai Fung’s opening, citing it as a sign of faith in the location.
