The death of 9-year-old Madeline Vernon from flu complications has highlighted the severity of the current flu season in North Carolina. According to her mother, Mary Edging, Madeline woke up with a fever of 104.9°F on January 28 and passed away the next day.
Dr. Daniel Park, medical director of UNC Medical Center’s pediatric emergency department, confirmed that this is part of the peak flu season, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting it as one of the highest levels in 15 years. He emphasized that vulnerable populations, including young children, older adults, and those with chronic medical conditions, are at a higher risk of severe illness.
Park urges anyone 6 months and older to take preventive measures, such as getting vaccinated against the flu. With studies showing that the vaccine can lower the chances of contracting the flu by 50%, this is an important reminder for individuals who have not yet received their vaccination.
Madeline’s death is one of two reported child fatalities from the flu in North Carolina this season, with over 300 flu-related deaths reported in the state last year. A GoFundMe has been set up to support Madeline’s family.
