Anthropic Hires Google DeepMind Scientist to Lead Zurich Office

Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has appointed Neil Houlsby, a former Google DeepMind research scientist, as the head of its newly opened European office in Zurich. The move is seen as a significant development for the US-based AI firm, which has been gaining traction as a competitor to larger rivals such as OpenAI.

Anthropic, valued at around $60 billion, focuses on AI safety research and has made various hires from other tech companies. Houlsby brings 10 years of experience in machine learning and AI research to the role, having previously studied for a PhD at the University of Cambridge.

The new Zurich office is Anthropic’s third European location, following London and Dublin. In a statement, Houlsby expressed his excitement about leading the team and developing multimodal capabilities for Claude’s LLM training. The company is seeking talented researchers and engineers to join its team in Zurich, focusing on AI development for the global good.

The announcement comes as the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit was held in Paris this week. US Vice President JD Vance criticized Europe’s legislation on AI, while Anthropic’s CEO emphasized the need for international conversations addressing AI’s growing security risks.
