A surprise arrival on New York City’s transit system has left commuters stunned and delighted. A 25-year-old mother gave birth to a baby girl on the W train stopped at the Herald Square station on Wednesday morning.
The train’s conductor held the train at the station after multiple passengers alerted them to the unexpected situation. The mother and newborn were taken to Bellevue Hospital in good condition.
This is not the first time a childbirth has occurred on NYC’s transit system. In 2012, Wanda Dueno gave birth to a baby boy on the J train near Chambers Street, while in January 1993, Vida Boateng welcomed a baby girl at the Wall Street subway station.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow praised the city’s response, saying it showcases the best of New York’s community spirit. The newborn and mother are expected to make a full recovery and will return to their daily commutes once they feel well enough.
