The New York Jets have officially ended their tenure with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, confirming his departure nearly two years after welcoming him with a large-scale news conference. The team released a statement expressing gratitude for Rodgers’ leadership, passion, and dedication, but did not provide a reason for the decision.
Rodgers, 41, flew to New Jersey last week for a meeting with coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey, which led to his ouster. Owner Woody Johnson thanked Rodgers for his two seasons in New York, praising his commitment to the team and fans.
Despite producing little on-field success, including a 5-12 record in 2024, Rodgers’ tenure was marked by moments of inspiration, such as his return from Achilles surgery late in the season. However, controversy surrounding his off-field behavior, including skipping a mandatory minicamp and being fined $100,000, may have contributed to his departure.
The Jets will likely release Rodgers with a post-June 1 designation, allowing them to split the remaining cap charges over two years. This move will free up $9.5 million in cap space and enable Rodgers to sign elsewhere immediately or wait until March 13.
Rodgers’ future remains uncertain, but his departure leaves a significant hole at quarterback for the Jets, who are expected to pursue a veteran replacement in trade or free agency.
