A highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak has been confirmed near the Outer Banks in North Carolina, according to the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission. Seven out of eight reported cases this winter were located in the area.
Wild birds, particularly waterfowl and shore birds, are being tested for the disease. The NCWRC is monitoring the situation as it spreads among wild birds, which migrate to the Outer Banks during the winter season.
While there have been only eight confirmed positives, many more samples are being sent for lab testing. However, verifying lab results takes time due to a single testing facility and confirmation process at a national lab.
Residents are advised to contact the NCWRC helpline if they encounter sick or dead birds. The situation has not affected livestock on poultry or dairy farms so far.
The Town of Kitty Hawk is seeking proposals for audit services, but this news article does not relate to the request.
