The Cleveland Browns have unveiled a $2.4 billion dome stadium proposal in Brook Park, relying on taxing users for funding, while promising not to draw from existing city, county, or state tax revenues. The plan would be part of an overall development worth over $3 billion, including hotels, housing, restaurants, and other entertainment venues.
Cuyahoga County officials have expressed skepticism, with some questioning the accuracy of the numbers and concerns about diverting funds away from downtown areas. Despite this, the Browns claim their long-term planning shows renovating the 26-year-old lakefront stadium would only be a short-term solution.
The team’s proposal suggests using new state income taxes, sales taxes, and commercial activities taxes generated by the development to pay off bonds. This approach aims to shift the financial burden from general fund tax dollars used for other state priorities.
Governor DeWine supports this plan, while some local officials remain opposed. The Browns’ long-term planning dates back to 2017, and they believe a dome stadium could last more than 50 years if built correctly.
