California Gas Prices Rise to $4.82 Amid Refinery Fire and Low Inventories

California’s average gas price has reached a new high of $4.82, with Southern California experiencing significant increases due to a refinery fire and low inventories. The Auto Club’s Weekend Gas Watch reported that prices have risen by more than two cents per day in most areas over the past week.

The Martinez PBF refinery in Northern California suffered a major fire on February 1, taking production offline indefinitely. Despite not directly affecting Southern California, the fire has led to a surge in wholesale gasoline prices and supply shifts to meet shortfalls in Northern California. This has resulted in higher gas prices in Southern California.

According to AAA’s fuel prices, the average cost of gas in California is $4.82 on Friday at 10 a.m., a 27-cent increase from a week ago and a 44-cent increase from a month ago. Last year’s average cost was $4.63.

While California’s gas prices are significantly higher than the national average, which stands at $3.17 as of Friday at 10 a.m., there are still options for finding cheaper gas near you. GasBuddy reports that gas is available for under $3.80 at various stations across the state.
