AMD’s Frank Azor has confirmed that the Radeon RX 9070 XT Red Devil requires a 900W power supply, just like its predecessor, the RX 7900 XTX Red Devil. This is despite initial reports suggesting lower wattage requirements.
The packaging of PowerColor’s Radeon RX 9070 XT Red Devil shows a minimum power supply requirement of 900W, which includes the entire system, not just the GPU. This matches AMD’s recommendation for a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 5900X.
However, it’s worth noting that this doesn’t mean the RX 9070 XT Red Devil will always require 900W. Experts estimate around 600-400W of that power is needed for the GPU itself, considering factory overclocks. The remaining power can be used for other system components.
AMD’s Azor has also hinted at releasing variants with lower minimum power supply requirements and cards featuring 8-pin PCIe power connectors for “worry-free upgrading.” This response seems to poke fun at Nvidia’s ongoing GeForce RTX 50-series shortage.
The RX 9070 XT will be available in early March, targeting the mid-range GPU market. Initial specs suggest a Navi 48 die with 4,096 shader cores, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, and a boost speed of up to 3,100 MHz.
