The animated sequel Ne Zha 2 has begun its journey, offering a helpful recap for new viewers and familiar fans alike. The film expands on the characters and mythology introduced in the 2019 hit, Demon Orb Ne Zha.
Master Immortal Taiyi constructs new bodies for Ne Zha and Spirit Orb Aobing using Sacred Lotus, but Aobing’s soul can’t settle before perishing. Taiyi comes up with a plan: share Ne Zha’s body for seven days to complete Master Wuliang’s ascension trials, which will win a magic potion to restore the Sacred Lotus.
This shared body leads to comedic moments as Ne Zha and Aobing struggle to work out control, changing movements and expressions. The film features impressive animation, blending human, animal, and dragon forms reminiscent of fantasy epics like Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings.
The movie’s pacing can be overwhelming with too much additional plotting outside of Ne Zha’s quest. However, writer-director Jiaozi names characters on screen and identifies locations for viewers to follow along easily.
Ne Zha 2 concludes with mid-credits scenes setting up further adventures, leaving room for a potential third film. With its stunning animation and captivating storyline, the sequel solidifies Ne Zha as an epic fantasy adventure series.
