Operation Level Up Saves Thousands from Cryptocurrency Investment Fraud Scams

The FBI has launched a proactive initiative called Operation Level Up to identify and notify victims of cryptocurrency investment fraud, saving them an estimated $285 million so far.

Cryptocurrency investment scams are on the rise, with many people losing their entire life savings or homes to fake investment opportunities. The scammers use sophisticated techniques to build trust, including creating realistic-looking investment platforms and apps.

The FBI identifies victims who are actively being defrauded and calls them directly, using techniques that allow it to confirm identities without asking for personal information. However, the FBI warns against ignoring unsolicited warnings from law enforcement or responding with specific instructions.

Operation Level Up also gathers leads and information on criminals perpetrating these frauds and shares illicit domains and accounts with private sector partners. The goal is to disrupt and dismantle these schemes, working with domestic and international partners.

To avoid falling victim, the public is encouraged to do their own research before making investments and be aware of who they are communicating with online. If someone pitches an investment opportunity, it’s likely cryptocurrency investment fraud. Anyone who believes they’ve been scammed should contact their banks and file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
