Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency website was hacked just days after its launch, defacing two pages and leaking classified information. The site, which promised maximum transparency, has been criticized for its lack of security and errors.
The website’s launch on Wednesday was marred by the discovery of two messages on the site, one saying “THESE ‘EXPERTS’ LEFT THEIR DATABASE OPEN – roro” and another stating “This is a joke of a .gov site.” Both messages have since been removed.
Experts say the site feels like it was hastily assembled and contains errors. They believe DOGE’s website is not running on government servers, citing concerns over data security. The Department also posted classified staffing information for a US intelligence agency online, raising eyebrows.
The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) appears to be the only intelligence agency listed on DOGE’s database, sparking concerns that sensitive information has been leaked. SpaceX, which holds a $1.8 billion contract with NRO, is also implicated in the leak.
As the department has cut thousands of federal employees and increased its own spending budget, concerns about data security have grown. The initiative’s new spending on “anticipated reimbursements from agencies in support of Software Modernization Initiative” has raised questions about accountability.
