German Prosecutors Investigate Possible Islamic Extremist Motive Behind Car-Ramming Attack

A 24-year-old Afghan man who arrived in Germany as an asylum-seeker in 2016 is under investigation for a car-ramming attack that injured 39 people, including two seriously and eight moderately. The suspect, identified only as Farhad N., was arrested after driving into a labor union demonstration in Munich.

According to prosecutors, the suspect claimed “Allahu Akbar” when questioned by police and prayed afterward, prompting an investigation by authorities who deal with extremism and terror. While there’s no evidence he was involved with any radical network, investigators believe the attack may have been motivated by Islamic extremist ideology.

The suspect had posted content on social media referencing Islam, but his online presence suggests a more mundane life as a bodybuilder and fitness model. Authorities found no indications of mental illness or concrete preparations for the attack.

Farhad N. is under investigation on 39 counts of attempted murder, bodily harm, and road traffic interference. The case has sparked concerns about immigration and security in Germany ahead of the country’s February election.
