Shark Attack in Turks and Caicos Leaves Tourist Injured

A 55-year-old tourist was seriously injured while trying to take a photo of a shark in the Turks and Caicos on February 7. The incident occurred in Blue Hills, Providenciales, when the woman attempted to engage with the shark from shallow waters. She was later taken to a medical center where she received stabilization and was transported off the island for further care.

The extent of her injury is unclear, but authorities have confirmed that the shark was approximately six feet long. The beach was closed following the incident as an “abundance of caution” measure before reopening on February 9 after determining the shark had moved to deeper waters.

Experts from the Department of Environment & Coastal Resources issued a warning urging the public not to feed marine wildlife and to be aware of their surroundings when in the water. This incident comes three months after similar warnings were issued by Cayman Islands authorities due to sharks associating scuba divers with food.
