Michigan Reports First Pediatric Flu Deaths of 2024-2025 Season

Two children in Michigan have died after being diagnosed with Influenza A (H1N1), marking the state’s first pediatric flu deaths of the current season. Genesee and Wayne counties each reported a confirmed case, as health officials investigate “several” additional suspected cases.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 57 child flu deaths nationwide so far this season. Michigan’s flu-like illness rates were at their highest in 15 years, with nearly 8% of outpatient visits attributed to the flu.

Vaccination rates are lower than usual, with only 15.1% of pediatric patients receiving this year’s shot. Experts stress the importance of vaccination, citing it as the most effective way to reduce severe illness and hospitalization risks from the flu.

Michigan officials recommend getting tested for COVID-19 and the flu if symptoms persist, and encourage those interested in learning more about vaccinations to consult with their primary care physician or visit Michigan.gov.
