Rockstar has released a surprise update for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition (GTA Trilogy), which brings the PC version closer to the mobile version in terms of quality. The update adds a “Classic Lighting mode” that restores the look and feel of the original games, a feature that was previously exclusive to mobile platforms.
The update also includes numerous fixes and improvements, such as allowing players to pause during cutscenes, fixing running animations while aiming, and enabling the use of shotguns, assault rifles, and flame throwers while running. The game’s visuals have been improved, making Vice City look “absolutely gorgeous” according to one tester.
While the update is a significant improvement, it still has its limitations. Some critics have described it as “a step in the right direction but still not enough.” However, the overall consensus on Reddit and ResetEra is that it’s a major and long overdue improvement to the game.
The removal of Grove Street Games from the GTA Trilogy splash screens has also been noticed, with some speculating about potential distancing between Rockstar and the studio that ported the games. Additionally, the update has caused issues on Steam Deck, but these can be resolved by adding “-dx12” as a launch option.
Rockstar has not yet commented on further patches or plans for Grand Theft Auto 6, which may indicate that this update marks the end of significant post-launch support.
