Vanderbilt Baseball Takes Down Grand Canyon in MLB Desert Invitational Opener

Vanderbilt baseball kicked off its 2025 season with a win on Friday as the Commodores defeated Grand Canyon 4-3 in the first game of the MLB Desert Invitational. The Antelopes, who made the NCAA tournament in 2024, are one of three opponents that will face Vanderbilt this weekend.

The Commodores have a strong roster, with 21 newcomers among their 43 players, including 14 freshmen and seven transfers. Returning players include preseason All-SEC selections RJ Austin, JD Thompson, and Miller Green, as well as shortstop Jonathan Vastine, second baseman Jayden Davis, and infielder Chris Maldonado.

Austin and Thompson are projected to be top picks in the 2025 MLB Draft, with both expected to go in the second round. The Commodores will face Nebraska on Saturday and UC Irvine on Sunday at different locations: Salt River Fields in Scottsdale and Sloan Park in Mesa, respectively.
