Uber has filed a lawsuit against DoorDash, alleging that its rival is stifling competition by intimidating restaurant owners into exclusive deals. The ride-share giant claims that DoorDash uses threats and penalties to pressure restaurants into signing agreements that allow only DoorDash to handle orders placed through the restaurants’ own websites.
According to Uber, this practice restricts restaurants’ freedom to choose their delivery partners and leads to lost revenue for the company. The lawsuit also mentions an example where a restaurant was allegedly threatened with increased rates if it continued to use Uber’s white-label delivery service, Uber Direct.
DoorDash has denied the allegations, stating that they have “no merit” and are based on Uber’s inability to offer a quality alternative. The two companies compete in the food delivery market through their respective apps and white-label services, but DoorDash claims to dominate the largest enterprise restaurants in America with its first-party delivery services.
The lawsuit seeks a jury trial, but Uber did not specify the amount of damages it is seeking. The case highlights the competitive nature of the food delivery market and raises questions about anticompetitive practices in the industry.
