A 12-year-old girl from Indiana, Adaline Deal, is fighting for her life after being denied a heart transplant due to her parents’ refusal to get her vaccinated against Covid and the flu. The family claims that doctors at Cincinnati Children’s hospital are making decisions based on outdated information about the vaccines.
Adaline has a rare heart defect called Ebstein’s anomaly, which puts her at risk of heart failure and makes it difficult for her body to circulate oxygen properly. She is reliant on a wheelchair due to her condition, but her parents’ decision not to vaccinate her against Covid and the flu has led to this decision.
The hospital claims that patients need to be up-to-date on vaccines before receiving a transplant, citing the risk of infection from immunosuppressive medication. However, Dr Aseem Malhotra, a British cardiologist, says that this decision is “appalling and unethical” and that the Covid vaccine could cause more harm than good for a 12-year-old child.
The American Academy of Pediatrics and the CDC recommend all children get vaccinated against Covid, but studies have linked the vaccine to rare cases of myocarditis in patients. Adaline’s family has set up a GoFundMe to raise funds for her heart transplant, which has so far raised $60,000 out of its $100,000 goal.
The family is now considering transferring Adaline’s care to an alternative hospital that does not require the Covid vaccine for transplant recipients. The case highlights the need for more nuanced decision-making when it comes to vaccination policies and organ transplantation.
