California’s average gas price has increased to $4.82, with most areas experiencing a rise of over two cents per day in the past week. The Auto Club’s Weekend Gas Watch attributes this surge to a refinery fire at the Martinez PBF refinery on February 1, which took production offline and led to higher wholesale gasoline prices.
Although Southern California is not directly affected by the fire, some supply from the area may be diverted to Northern California, where pump prices have increased even further. Arizona has also seen its gas prices rise due to a fire at a different refining facility in Contra Costa County.
The average national gas price is $3.17 as of Friday, about three cents higher than a week ago and $1.65 less than California’s average. If you’re looking for lower gas prices, GasBuddy reports that some stations across the state have gas selling for under $3.80, including in San Jacinto, Southern California.
