Presidents Day, celebrated on Monday, February 17, is a federal holiday. Government offices will be closed on this day. The holiday honors the birthdays of former presidents George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as well as the first federal holiday to honor an individual’s birth date.
Originally called Washington’s Birthday, the holiday was designated by Congress in 1885. In 1971, the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February. This shift created a gap between Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday, giving rise to the popular name of Presidents Day.
Other government institutions will also be closed on this day, including the U.S. Postal Service, banks, and stock markets. However, most restaurants, grocery stores, and retail stores will remain open. To plan ahead, the Office of Personnel Management has released a list of federal holidays in 2025, which includes Presidents Day.
