NASA astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore have rejected President Donald Trump’s claims that they were left behind in space by the Biden administration. The two astronauts were part of a 10-day mission to the International Space Station but faced delays due to issues with their spacecraft’s thrusters.
Despite Trump’s statement, NASA says it is committed to getting its astronauts back safely. Williams stated on CNN that the agency wants to change the narrative from “abandoned” to “prepared and committed.” The agency has also moved up the return flight to March 12, using a SpaceX capsule that requires fewer safety checks than originally planned.
The claims have turned NASA into a partisan issue, with some drawing attention to Elon Musk’s role in contracting with SpaceX. However, NASA emphasized its focus on ensuring safe transportation for its astronauts, rather than engaging in politics.
