Tennessee baseball kicked off its national title defense with a resounding 15-0 win over Hofstra, as transfer pitcher Liam Doyle dazzled with an impressive outing.
Doyle struck out 11 batters and allowed just one hit, earning praise from coach Tony Vitello. “It kind of looked like us last year trying to hit him,” Vitello said, highlighting Doyle’s improved skills.
The Vols’ offense also got off to a strong start, led by pinch-hit homer from Hunter High, which sparked a seven-run sixth-inning rally. Other newcomers like Dean Curley and Andrew Fischer homered as well.
As for Doyle’s performance, he flashed an upper-90s fastball and mid-80s breaking ball, both of which were highly effective. He got off to a slow start, allowing one hit until the fourth inning, but ultimately shut down the opposing team in his first outing.
The win marked Tennessee’s return to form after an unorthodox season last year that led to a national title win. With Doyle back on the mound and new players contributing at the plate, the Vols are looking strong heading into their weekend series.
