Germany: Munich Car Ramming Attack Linked to Islamist Motive

A 24-year-old Afghan suspect has been arrested in connection with a car ramming attack in Munich, Germany. Authorities say the suspect, who has admitted to deliberately driving into the participants of a demonstration, had an “Islamist motive” for the crime.

The suspect, who had arrived in Germany as an asylum-seeker in 2016 and was living on a valid residence permit, allegedly uttered the words “Allahu akbar” (God is greatest) to police officers. He has been charged with 36 counts of attempted murder, bodily harm, and dangerous interference with road traffic.

According to prosecutors, the suspect’s phone and social media activity were analyzed as part of the investigation, revealing a mix of athletic and religious posts on Instagram. The attack left 36 people injured, including children, some of whom are seriously hurt.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier attended a moment of silence at the scene, condemning the “brutality” of the crime and vowing to hold the perpetrator accountable. Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai also condemned the attack, expressing sympathy for the victims’ families and praising Germany’s support for Afghanistan.
