The United States has asked European nations to contribute security guarantees for Ukraine amid escalating diplomatic efforts to end the three-year conflict with Russia. Finnish President Alexander Stubb revealed that the US had sent a document asking questions, including potential troop contributions.
Washington expects its European partners to take the lead in establishing a durable security framework and is looking forward to their proposals. A strong, self-reliant Europe is seen as beneficial for both US and EU interests.
The questionnaire includes six questions, with one specifically for EU member states, aiming to explore possible frameworks for negotiations and European engagement in resolving the conflict. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has called for a European army, citing the need for increased protection from the US.
US President Donald Trump recently spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggesting that negotiations should begin now. The prospect of a rapid settlement has intensified the focus on security guarantees and Europe’s potential role in supporting Ukraine if US support wavers.
