A driver plowed their car into a labor union demonstration in central Munich on Thursday, injuring 30 people, including children, authorities said. The incident is believed to be an attack.
The suspect, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum-seeker with a valid residence permit, was arrested after police fired a shot at the car. The man had previously been a witness due to his job as a store detective and lived in Munich.
This latest incident comes three weeks after a 2-year-old boy and a man were killed in a knife attack in Aschaffenburg, also in Bavaria. A series of recent attacks has pushed migration to the forefront of Germany’s election campaign.
Germany’s main opposition conservative bloc has demanded a tougher approach to irregular migration, calling for increased deportations. The far-right Alternative for Germany has also called for action.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the incident as “a terrible attack” and said those who commit crimes will face severe punishment and deportation. Bavarian governor Markus Söder warned that more needs to be done to address the issue, citing recent attacks in Mannheim and Solingen last year.
